Two-Phase Treatment
What is two-phase treatment?
Two phase treatment is a process where orthodontic treatment is divided into two stages, or "phases". The 1st phase usually begins some time between ages 7–10. The goal of the 1st phase is to optimize space for developing permanent teeth, improve the alignment of the front teeth, and to begin correction of an abnormal bite. The 2nd phase of treatment usually begins between ages 11-13. During the 2nd phase, all of the permanent teeth are aligned and final correction of the bite is achieved.
What are some advantages of two-phase orthodontic treatment?
- Improved space for favorable eruption of permanent teeth
- Correction of protruding teeth reduces risk of injury
- Resolving bite problems that can cause facial asymmetry if left untreated
- Less time in full braces than would be necessary if the problem were left untreated until later
- Improved esthetics during time when children can be self-conscious about their teeth as a result of teasing
- Improved stability of the anterior teeth as they are straightened earlier
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child should have an initial examination by an orthodontist at age 7, or when the upper front teeth begin to erupt. At your complimentary consultation, Dr. Jacobsen will discuss with you whether two-phase orthodontic treatment would be beneficial for your child.
