For Children

When is the best time to have orthodontic treatment? It depends upon the orthodontic problem, and every child’s teeth are different. Dr. Jacobsen will evaluate your child’s teeth, and discuss with you the recommended timing of orthodontic treatment based upon the specific needs of your child.

In some situations, it is best to do orthodontic treatment in 2 phases (stages), so as to prevent the orthodontic problem from worsening, or to decrease the severity of the problem.

  • In 2-phase treatment, the first phase usually begins between ages 7-10.
  • Phase 1 treatment may include partial braces, appliances to help the jaws fit together better, appliances to make more space for developing teeth, or appliances to preserve space.
  • The second stage of treatment (full braces) is usually initiated after all of the primary teeth have been lost, and the permanent teeth are present.

If early treatment is not necessary, Dr. Jacobsen will likely recommend beginning orthodontic treatment around the time that the last primary teeth (baby teeth) are lost.
